How we read the rules around here

A forum works when everyone knows where the edges are. Before you post a question or answer someone else's, here is what we mean by a few terms that come up often, and where the community draws the line.

What counts as "advice"

Replies here are shared experience, not a professional opinion. When someone describes rewiring a plug or opening a geyser, they are telling you what worked in their house. Gas, electrical and structural work still needs a registered person on site, and we say so plainly in those threads.

Regional boards are not interchangeable

A fix that holds up in Benoni may fail in Ballito. Frost dates, rainfall patterns, municipal bylaws and even hardware stock differ between Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Post in the board closest to you, or name your town in the first line.

Classifieds are for passing things on

The classifieds corner exists so spare parts, hand tools and half-used bags of cement find a second home instead of a landfill. It is not a shopfront. Traders running a business should keep listings occasional and honest about condition, age and whether the item was used on a live installation.

Reading is open, posting needs an account

You can browse every thread without signing up, which is useful when you are standing in front of a dripping valve at 9pm. To ask a question or reply, you need an account. That keeps the answers tied to a name and cuts down on drive-by replies that go nowhere.

Where moderation steps in

We remove posts that push financial schemes, gambling, or anything unrelated to running a household. We also close threads that turn into personal attacks. If a reply is unsafe, say so in the thread and flag it, rather than letting it stand as the last word for the next person who searches.

Threads worth reading next

Picked from the boards that keep coming back to the top. Written by members who tried it in their own house first, then told the rest of us what worked.
