Questions that come up in the inbox

Most of what lands in our messages folder is not a complaint. It is someone halfway through a repair, stuck on one detail, and unsure whether to keep going or stop. These are the ones we answer again and again.

Can I post a question without signing up?

Reading is open to everyone, including the regional boards and the classifieds corner. Posting needs an account, mostly so replies can be threaded and so a member can be reached if a follow-up detail matters. Registration takes a minute and asks for nothing beyond a username and email.

How long until someone replies?

Home repair and load-shedding threads usually get a first answer within a day. Gardening and budgeting questions can sit longer, especially over weekends. If a thread goes quiet, add a photo or the model number of the part, that is often what was missing.

Is advice here a substitute for a qualified tradesperson?

No. Members share what worked on their own geyser, gate motor or leaking tap. Anything involving electrical wiring, gas, or a certificate for insurance needs a registered professional. We say so plainly in threads where the line is close.

Which regional board should I use?

Pick the province where the job is happening, not where you live. A Highveld frost question and a coastal salt-air question get different answers even for the same plant. Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal each have their own board.

Can I sell tools in the classifieds corner?

Yes, that is what it is for. Spare parts, second-hand tools, leftover building material. Keep the listing to the item, its condition and the area for collection. Meet in a public spot and check the item before money changes hands.

How do I report a message that breaks the rules?

Use the report link on the message itself. Moderators review flagged posts and remove anything off-topic, aggressive or pushing a scam. For anything else, reach us at info@lifeslittlehelper.com or call 033 130 7486.

Still unsure where a question belongs? The contact page routes it to the right board, and our privacy policy explains what happens to your details.

Your Threads and Replies

Everything you have asked, answered or followed sits here in one running list. New replies land at the top, older threads stay where you left them, and nothing disappears just because a conversation went quiet for a few weeks.

Home repairs Updated 12 minutes ago

Geyser drip in the ceiling void, Centurion

Three replies so far. The pressure control valve was the culprit, not the tank. One member walked through closing the supply and reading the drip rate before calling anyone out.

Last reply from a retired plumber in Gauteng who asked for a photo of the overflow pipe.

Load shedding Updated 2 hours ago

Gate motor clicks but will not open after Stage 4

Battery voltage was sitting just under 12V after a long outage. Two members compared charger setups, one suggested testing the battery under load rather than at rest.

Marked as solved. Thread stays open for anyone with the same clicking sound.

Gardening Updated yesterday

Basil keeps bolting in Durban humidity

Coastal growers shared what works: afternoon shade, deeper pots, and pinching the tips before the plant decides to flower. A Highveld member noted the same plant behaves completely differently inland.

Six replies, no firm answer yet. Photos of two surviving plants were posted.

Household budget Updated 3 days ago

Feeding four on a tight month without repeating meals

A long thread with pantry lists, freezer habits and one strong opinion about buying mince in bulk. Several replies focus on cooking once and stretching it across two dinners.

Still active. New replies are being added most evenings.

Classifieds Updated 5 days ago

Spare gate motor battery and two remotes, Western Cape

Passed on to a member in the Southern Suburbs. The thread is closed but left visible so the handover details stay readable for anyone doing the same swap.

No further replies expected.

Reaching the people behind the replies

Messages on Life's Little Helper move through a small team, not a call centre. If a thread needs a moderator's eye, a classifieds listing looks off, or your account is stuck mid-signup, here is how to get a real person on it.

Email the board

Best for account issues, reported posts and anything with a screenshot attached. Include your username and the thread link so we can find it without a back-and-forth.

Phone during office hours

Weekdays between 08:00 and 16:30. Useful when a regional board is misbehaving or you cannot log in at all. Keep your email address nearby, we may ask for it.

Post or write in

For paperwork, classifieds disputes or anything that needs a signature, the postal address still works. Replies here take the longest, so use it as a last resort.

5936 Van Wyk Villages Suite 877
West Meganbury, NW 8618

How long a reply usually takes

  • Account and login problems: same working day, often within a few hours.
  • Reported posts and moderation flags: reviewed within 24 hours, weekends included.
  • Classifieds listings and spare-part swaps: two to three working days.
  • General questions about boards or regional sections: up to three working days.

If your question is really a how-do-I-fix-this one, the forum itself is faster than we are. Before you write in, check the contact page for the right route, and read the privacy policy if your message involves personal details you would rather not post publicly.
